Classroom ventilation: fresh air for better learning

A healthy indoor climate in schools is more important than ever. Children and teachers spend much of the day in classrooms, where air quality has a direct impact on their concentration, well-being and health. Good ventilation is indispensable.

Why ventilation in classrooms is so important

In a classroom, there are often 20 to 30 students together in one room. Without sufficient air exchange, CO₂ levels rise quickly, causing symptoms such as fatigue, headaches and loss of concentration. In addition, poor ventilation can contribute to the spread of germs.

Research shows that fresh air leads to:

  • Better concentration and learning performance
  • Less absenteeism
  • A more comfortable indoor climate

The challenges in existing school buildings

Many schools in the Netherlands are still struggling with outdated ventilation systems or have no mechanical ventilation at all. Especially in older buildings, there is often only natural ventilation, such as through windows or grilles. This is often insufficient, especially in the winter months, when windows remain closed to prevent heat loss

Program of Requirements Fresh Schools

The Program of Requirements (PoR) Fresh Schools 2021 helps school boards and municipalities in their role as clients of renovation or new construction. You can save construction and design costs by determining your requirements early on. For more information about Fresh Schools, visit the RVO site.

Investing in the future

A well-ventilated classroom is not only pleasant, but also an investment in the future of students. Fresh air contributes to better performance, more energy and fewer health problems.
